Eden update

In the interest of documenting, here are a few things going on with Eden lately.  She is a delight and we are grateful for her every day!

Sleep - Better than the four-month regression hell, but this is an ongoing issue for us.  The latest is that she really doesn't nap enough at day care.  Night sleep is much improved, but inconsistent.  We are working with sleep consultants from Baby Sleep Site to try to make sure her needs are being met and she is not chronically overtired.

Temperament - spirited!  Eden is happy most of the time, happiest around lots of people. It can be a challenge to keep her entertained when not a lot of people are around.  She definitely lets you know when she's not pleased too.  We haven't had separation anxiety really, though she definitely recognizes us and gets very excited when we pick her up from daycare.  She recognizes aunt Becca too.  She loves to play with people, and loves when people eat her feet and sing silly songs to her, and is actually even ticklish!  She laughs lots when her armpits are tickled.  Her favorite songs include Mommy's silly version of "I had a little rooster," "I put some desitin on you," "A baby bath," "Let's all change your diaper/go to Suzuki/etc."

Baby wearing - Loves to be in ergo these days.  Especially front facing.  We have two (a regular and a 360) and use them both regularly.

Breastfeeding - This is going well for the moment.  She nurses decently, easily distracted but not as bad as a couple months ago.  We came through a bout of thrush I might post about separately.  She hasn't started biting yet, I hear that's the next big thing. I struggle with milk supply but somehow have managed to keep up and even have a decent freezer stash.  I was going to write a big post about meeting my 6 month exclusive breastfeeding goal but didn't have time.  As always, breastfeeding is somewhat at odds with sleep.  Next goal is 9 months without formula supplementing.  I feel pretty confident that we will make it but who knows? We are just cruising at this point.

Solids - Eden really loves eatin'!  We have introduced the following foods so far, and she seems to love all of them:

  • avocado
  • banana
  • sweet potato
  • carrot (she may have had a mild reaction to this so we're waiting another month to reintroduce)
  • oatmeal
  • yogurt
  • summer squash
Health - overall good.  People comment on how tall she is, but she's really only 50th  percentile, just looks a little long because she's only 25th for weight I guess (but looks chunky).  Every few weeks she picks up a cold from day care, which causes her some mild congestion, and which I end up getting a worse version of.  I had a 102 degree fever for a bug that we barely even noticed on her!   Hopefully that stuff will ease up in summer.  Some other specific health things:

  • Blocked tear duct: she has has this since birth.  It causes goop that hardens on her eye and sometimes gets inflamed.  It comes and goes.  It is somewhat of a pain because wiping it is so unpleasant for both us and her, and because it attracts SO many comments.  I never know what to say - usually we just let people know it's not pinkeye, not contagious, etc.  If it doesn't clear on it's own in a year she will need to have a minor procedure done to clear it.
  • Reflux:  she has been off Zantac for about a month, and has been spitting up a lot less!  Not nothing, but I feel less scared when taking her out with no bib.  I would say she spits up an average of 1-2 times a day now, as opposed to 10 times that.
  • Thrush:  separate post about this if/when I have time.
  • Teething:  showing some signs of teething in that she's chewing on her pacifier and people's arms - but haven't felt the beginnings of any teeth yet.
Development - She's a little behind on some of her milestones, most notably rolling (she's only done this a handful of times and doesn't like when we or her teachers practice with her).  Given how little tummy time she tolerated, this is somewhat expected.  On the other hand, she's good at sitting unsupported, and her fine motor seems on track.  She enjoys playing with her toys, especially stacking cups, which she flings around and waves in the air triumphantly.  Even so, since she's so much less mobile than other babies around her age, we went ahead and contacted early intervention for an assessment.  I'm not too concerned, but if there's something we should be doing to help her, we want to be doing it!
